Mindset Activities for the Sol

Mindset Activities for the Sol. This is the third in a four part series from adventure travel expert Michael Bennett. You can start at the beginning with Week 1.

WEEK 3: Where do you want to be [go]?

Having connected with who we are and where we are, we are now ready to begin thinking about where we want to be or go. Having a clearly articulated vision of our desired future is critical to actually achieving that vision. Paraphrasing from Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly effective People, almost every realized goal or vision is created twice: Once in our minds, and once in the reality that is our lives. So let’s take a few minutes to figure out where it is that you want to go.

Activity: Give yourself at least 15 minutes [30 is ideal] to immerse yourself in the following activity [adapted from Sonja Lyubomirsky’s book The How of Happiness]:

Imagine your life at some future date [keep it under 10 years]. Everything that you wanted has come true: You have become the person you want to become, you have the career that you long for, you live in the perfect location, and you have the perfect lifestyle. Describe all of this in as much detail as possible. Write this as if it were real TODAY [i.e., in the present tense, as if everything already IS reality!]. Remember to include, but not be limited by, the following questions:

  • Where are you?
  • Who are you with?
  • What are you doing?
  • What is your contribution to the world?
