Adventure Travel to Papua New Guinea

Sol Fitness Adventures Goes to Papua New Guinea

When you hear “Adventure travel” what comes to mind?

Most of us might say, in some way or another, that adventure travel is about the experience of new ideas, people, places, and food.  I’m starting to learn that adventure travel is also about the excitement and challenge of the complete unknown!

When I was 12 years old, I read a magazine article about the people and tribes of Papua New Guinea. The pictures of the people captivated me.  The cultural ideas intrigued me. The food, well it concerned me. After all, I thought, what is this food they eat called “cannibalism”? Where is this primal place? I couldn’t even tell you. But I had to go! I pointed to the magazine and clearly proclaimed “I want to go there!” Though my travels over the years have taken me to many fascinating places, Papua New Guinea has held 1st place status on my bucket list since reading that article as a youngster.

This February, I will work with Melanie Webb of Sol Fitness Adventures to set out on a trip of a lifetime. Sol and I invite you to follow along as I explore the little known country of Papua New Guinea.

Between now and the time I leave, I will gather as much information on the country and people as I can. Thus far, the only guidebook I can find (recommendations are welcome) is the ever-so-trusty Lonely Planet. Relying on my book, fellow world travelers, and the locals of Papua New Guinea to help me along the way, this will surely be a trip of a lifetime.

So let’s start with the first two questions everyone asks me… Where is Papua New Guinea? And how does one get there?

Papua New Guinea is an Oceania country roughly 160km north of Australia and just south of the equator. The country is made up of more than 600 islands and with that, over 800 languages! I will travel to Sydney, Australia from the west coast of the United States. After arriving in Sydney, I’ll fly north to the PNG capital city of Port Moresby.

Where to from there? Well, I’m not quite sure yet! After all, it’s the excitement of the unknown that I’m after. Once I figure out where I’m going, you’ll be the first to know!
